Is prosperity theology even Christianity? Or is it something else? The dark underside of “Jesus wants you to be rich” is that if somebody isn’t rich they must be doing something wrong. You’ve abdicated any responsibility for the poor. Can you still call yourself Christian if you jettison the teachings of Christ?

And did prosperity theology cause the crash? Hardly. I’m sure it’s led a lot of people to make really bad financial decisions—but it’s not big enough to bring down our entire financial system. In fact, it doesn’t deviate much in substance from our American Dream mythology—except that it acknowledges its own irrationality.

A lot of people making a lot of bad financial decisions wasn’t, in itself, enough to bring down economy. The crash required smarter people to do dumber things.

Agreed 100%, especially the first part.

Do you know where we can get a proper prosperity theologian (to the extent that such things exist) to have an Epic Tumblr Throwdown?

Does Joel Osteen have a tumblr? He should get one. I know someone who used to work as an accountant at his church. I’ll get on it.

[grins with mock intensity] What I wouldn’t give to wipe the smile off that guy’s face….
