USA National Gas Price Heat Map

USA National Gas Price Heat Map - GasBuddy.com

Now you can see what gas prices are around the country at a glance. Areas are color coded according to their price for the average price for regular unleaded gasoline.

You will note that some divisions in price ranges follow state lines. These are created by differences in state gas taxes, rather than production and transportation costs. California is mostly mapped in red and Wyoming is mostly green because of what goes on inside state capitols rather than what goes on in oil fields and refineries. And it is no coincidence that the states with the big, pretentious, and intrusive governments are in the midst of budget crises. (California, for example is nearing default.) These same states have high taxes, annual vehicle inspections, civilian disarmament (“gun control”) laws, restrictive zoning, expensive building permits, and on and on.

I think someone may have confused Wyoming with Colorado, since Wyoming is mostly yellow.

Carry on.

I filled up my car yesterday at a station I’d never been to. Turns out the advertised price on the sign is only for cash-customers. It’s 6 cents more per gallon to swipe a card. Once I think about it from the perspective of a small business owner, I can understand it—but it annoyed me at the time….. Have you experienced that at gas stations at all?

Over the years I’ve come to adopt a pretty extremist view on this, and I think I’m even prepared to accept the reductio ad Hitler case. Had it been feasible to coordinate the population of Poland, Denmark, Norway, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, etc. into a mass campaign of non-violent resistance to German occupation I think that would have brought even Hitler down.

Matthew Yglesias » The Virtues of Nonviolence.

Dear Matt,

How?

(via ayjay)

You think the Germans would have stood for the coordinated slaughter of non-violent civilians in Poland, Denmark, Norway, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, etc? Killing people weighs on the conscience pretty quickly.

(via squashedcomments)

No, it wouldn’t work. The Nazis were masters at propaganda, and the Germans were a combination of complicit and deceived. But even if it would “work,” it’s so far beyond the scope of possibility that it’s not worth considering. Yglesias basically said this: “If the impossible were possible, then it would have worked.” To which I say: OK—great insight there buddy. Now go home.

Small is only too aware of what too much time spent online can do to other mental processes. Among the young people he calls digital natives (a term first coined by the US writer and educationalist Marc Prensky), he has repeatedly seen a lack of human contact skills – “maintaining eye contact, or noticing non-verbal cues in a conversation”. When he can, he does his best somehow to retrain them: “When I go to colleges and talk to students, I have them do one of our face-to-face human contact exercises: ‘Turn to someone next to you, preferably someone you don’t know, turn off your mobile device.’ One person talks and the other one listens, and maintains eye contact. That’s very powerful. One pair of kids started dating after they’d done it.

John Harris, quoting Dr. Gary Small (via wesleyhill)

I’m no Luddite—nobody has to convince me of the inventive awesomeness of modern technology—but I do think it’s true that we are just beginning to discover all the subtle changes in human interaction prompted by the online evolution.

Is this cause or correlation? Could an alternate headline be “computer nerds are socially awkward”?

(via squashedcomments)

Undoubtedly correlation—if only because cause is too difficult and specific to nail down. But I think those effected are a broader group than just computer nerds; that’s why the phenomenon is noteworthy.

Media from the 2010 Ligonier Ministries conferences is up. Some of the phenomenal topics include:

  • How do we know which interpretation is right?
  • Is the exclusivity of Christ unjust?
  • Why do Christians still sin?
  • Is the doctrine of inerrancy defensible?
  • Does the doctrine of divine decrees eliminate human will?
  • Why does the universe look so old?
  • If God is good, how could He command holy war?

All the video is streaming for free.

I couldn’t make it through. I’m sorry. I tried. I got about 12 minutes into the “How do we know which interpretation is right?” when I heard that the Bible is the inerrant Word of God because it says that it is the inerrant Word of God. It was too circular. (And this is leaving aside the problem with whether the Bible actually claims to be inerrant in its presently assembled and translated form.)

I really like the Bible. I’ll go as far as infallible. But inerrant based on apologetically circular reasoning is too much to swallow.

Many different meanings and implications get thrown around with these words. Would you be willing to define your distinction between inerrant and infallible?

I thought when we elected a black president, we were going to get a black president. You know, this [BP oil spill] is where I want a real black president. I want him in a meeting with the BP CEOs, you know, where he lifts up his shirt so you can see the gun in his pants. That’s — (in black man voice) ‘we’ve got a motherfu**ing problem here?’ Shoot somebody in the foot.

Bill Maher: Obama Not Acting Like A “Real Black” President - RealClearPolitics

James Taranto comments: “Those who’ve been desperately searching for racism in criticism of Obama have finally found it.”

In other news : Sarah Silverman hates Jews and blacks. And smelly Mexicans. And Lisa Lampanelli hates fags ass pirates. And Richard Pryor hates white people. And Lenny Bruce hates everybody.

It’s called a Sense Of Humor, dude.

The problem with calling things Racism! that aren’t racism is that actual, real, evil racism goes right under the radar of polite society, the nasty undertones continue to swell, and people like Taranto—who, I dare say, knows a thing or two about incendiary language and attention-grabbing tactics—will never call out his conservative co-offenders on the kind of poisonous hatred they use to line their pockets with millions while claiming to be colorblind and lily-white-innocent when it comes to such charges.

I mean, I know you’re not a Bill Maher fan, sds, but really… to accuse someone (or support the accusation of someone) who is about as free of racial bias of anyone in the history of media or comedy of being, you know, a Racist!, well… that’s reprehensible in my book.

(via danielholter)

Your statement implies that because it’s humor, it’s not racist. I’m sure you don’t actually believe that.

Is it funny? Sure, in a way. I don’t have any problems affirming that. But it doesn’t change the fact that Maher is spouting insidious stereotypes of black men in a way that would get most non-liberals publicly crucified.

(via sds)

wow bill mahar why not only to stereotype, but also to be blantanly racist and assume that all “real black people” carry guns and are by nature aggressive. fuck you.

Also fuck you too who ever transcribed this. What the hell is a “black man voice”?! why couldn’t you have said perhaps (as this is what I assume you REALLY mean) “(In a deep voice)”.

Also, just because it’s humor, doesn’t mean it’s not racist. A great many things that you consider humor is highly racist and sexist. I’m assuming that you might be an affluent straight-white-male. There are few offensive jokes that you will ever be subject to as a straight-white-male… much like Bill. Anyone who ISN’T straight, white, or male do and will have jokes made about them. What’s the big deal though, right? I challenge you to step in to the shoes of someone who is oppressed (and in your [possible] case, the only thing in which you might be able to obtain in the realm of oppressed is to grow some balls and for a day or two, say that you are queer, and don’t just half ass it, really play the role.. and not in the BS stereotypical way, the way in which YOU might act in order to make a “humorous” joke about people that are LGBT, Queer, or trans/cis-gender…) and then see how it feels to be someone that is oppressed.

Then tell me what’s the big fucking deal.

(via adailyriot)

How very articulate of you.

I find it deliciously ironic that I am being criticized by liberals for defending blacks against insidious stereotypes—on the grounds that I am not oppressed.

Well then, I guess there’s no argument against reasoning like that!

(via sdscomments)

lol it wasn’t at you SDS, it was at that other person. I neglected to say that I agreed with you. sorry about that.

(via adailyriot)

My bad as well. I misinterpreted your comments as being directed at me. Thanks for the clarification!

Food

theroyaladventure:

In case you haven’t noticed, we like to eat.  And eating our own cooking here is often better, because we can order all our ingredients for a recipe online and have them shipped to the house.  Tonight, it’s baked salmon with peppers and green onions in a white wine and lime sauce, with seasoned spinach, honey-glazed green beans, and rice.

Tonight’s gonna be a good night.

To mis-quote The Eagles, there’s gonna be some heartburn tonight.

Democrats cannot win elections without capturing the votes of independent-minded swing voters. And that is where writing off the tea party as a bunch of racist kooks becomes self-destructive. The tea party outrage over health-care reform, deficit spending and entitlements run amok is no fringe concern. And it is insulting to all voters to suggest that criticism of President Obama, even by people who want to throw him out of office, is motivated by racism.

Juan Williams: Tea Party Anger Reflects Mainstream Concerns - WSJ.com (via sds)

This is kind of silly. The tea party doesn’t have to be “labeled” as a racist kooks, they prove themselves to be racist every single time they have a march. They write it into the signs they carry around with them and scream it from their lips. Even if you want to split hairs, they are, at the very least, hateful toward anything they consider “non-Christian,” and that is equal to racism in a lot of people’s books, including mine. The “kook” spawns from a clear, distinct, emotion-based motivation, removed from any need for fact or actual history. They represent themselves as aggressively uninformed about the country they claim to love so much. You may be sheltered from people who are willing to admit in broad daylight that they hate black people, but you are welcome to come take a walk through a break room at one of the industrial shops in my rural Texas town and listen to the word “nigger” spew forth without remorse at record speeds. Come talk to my friend Rusty who recently cried as he told me about losing his best friend of 30 years, because he never knew he was racist until he said, “I should go to DC myself and kill that fucking nigger.” You are welcome to take my seat behind the 19-year old oil and gas trust fund baby that I sit behind in Administrative Process who regularly calls Obama a terrorist, despite the professor’s attempts to stop her.

As an independent-minded swing voter, I can guaran-goddamn-tee you that my vote will be RAGING left the next election cycle, because I am willing to take the risk of the United States losing its overbloated ego and “superpower” status, then ever vote in a way that aligns myself with a party of hate.

(via afghanibanani)

You very clearly did not read the article, and you clearly have not observed the Tea Party folks. Put your hateful tar and feathers away, please.
